I.

A bell is not a place.

You keep your bell’s number. Its place in the row changes. In Plain Hunt, move one place each row, stay twice at each end, then turn.

II.

Hear the empty space.

The other five bells keep time. Yours sounds only when you tap. Begin with two rows of rounds; the changes start after the first rest.

III.

Let the line go.

Every six accurate strikes fade a third of the guide. Then try Plain Bob: five leads, sixty changes, and a small dodge that changes everything.

Inside the method Notation, sound & what this practice can teach

A small rule, a long journey.

Plain Hunt: alternate x and 16. The cross swaps all adjacent pairs; 16 keeps the front and back places still. Twelve changes return to rounds.

Plain Bob Minor: x16x16x16,12 is symmetric shorthand. One full lead is x16x16x16x16x16x12. At the lead end, 1st and 2nd places stay still; the bells above dodge. Five twelve-change leads return to rounds. Bell 1 remains a hunt bell; choose 2–6 to learn the dodges.

Your timing, made visible.

A strike within one third of a bell interval counts as accurate. Results include missed rows and extra taps. The blue trace plots where your strikes landed in time, measured in bell intervals within each row; the fine grey line is the intended path.

These are synthesised bells with hum, prime, tierce, quint and higher partials. Tapping triggers the sound directly: this teaches method and rhythm, not rope handling or the delay of a real swinging bell. Device and Bluetooth latency can affect your score.
