The rule

At each character, search only the preceding ruler-width span. Emit the longest fully earlier match of at least three characters; otherwise emit one literal. Every blue slip is therefore locally auditable.

A tiny edit changes the alignment of later opportunities. Amber edges mark token positions whose kind, distance, length, or literal differs from the untouched passage under the same ruler.
